According to a recent interview by Entertainment Weekly, which was published this weekend in honor of the film's 16th anniversary, Meg Cabot, the author whose books inspired the Disney live-action film adaptations, said there has been talks about a possible third film installment in the bellowed princess franchise.
While Cabot said that no film has been officially announced to be created, "[It] could happen," as a script has already been written for a potential third installment in the princess saga.
When asked if she could provide more details of the script that was written, Cabot couldn't offer many details, saying, "I would love to sit and talk about [it], but I can't. I'm not allowed." What Cabot was able to offer about the written script was that it followed more "the movie than the books."
But what we do know is that The Princess Diaries film stars Anne Hathaway, who portrayed Mia Thermopolis, a teen who most of us could relate to (except for the "being a princess" part), and Julie Andrews who played her fantastic lovable grandmother and Queen of Genovia, are up for a possible third installment.
During an interview in March of this year, Julie Andrews told Buzzfeed that she and Hathaway were open to doing a third installment "In honor of [Garry Marshall]." Gary Marshall was the director of The Princess Diaries films and had told People in early 2016 that he had been in the talks about possibly making a third installment of the franchise, but unfortunately passed away on July of 2016 due to complications from pneumonia after having a stroke. According to Julie Andrews, "[Anne Hathaway's] very keen to do it. I would very willingly and happily do it."
And just like that, Julie Andrews and Meg Cabot have revived our hopes of getting a third installment!
As a big fan of both Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries books and the Disney film adaptations that came after, not to mention Garry Marshall's work as a director, I am really excited and truly hope that a third installment is filmed. There's so much more to Mia Thermopolis' story that is left and should continue to be explored (including the really really really funny moments, I've got my popcorn ready for that), not to mention I genuinely think it would be a nice tribute to Garry Marshall like Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway definitely thought.
So for that, we are here, waiting with open arms already.
Again, while nothing's confirmed, the film's stars enthusiasm about a possible installment, the talks, and the written script certainly give us fans something to possibly look forward to. So Disney, never forget: it's never too late for a third Princess Diaries installment.
