We believed and stayed hopeful, Elle Woods, and we got it!
According to an exclusive report by Deadline Hollywood, a Legally Blonde 3 film is close to officially happening as Reese Witherspoon, who starred in the iconic films as the lively queen of bend and snap and Harvard graduate Elle Woods, is currently in talks to close a deal with MGM to reprise her iconic role.
Karen McCullah and Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith, the writers behind the adapted script for the beloved 2001 original film, are also in final talks with MGM to return as screenwriters for the third film.
While currently not much is known about the film's exact premise (as contracts are currently still being dealt), an insider told Deadline Hollywood writer Mike Fleming Jr that Legally Blonde 3 "will be much in the spirit of the first film, in which Woods' idealism and pink-dominant wardrobe prevailed over cynicism and snootiness all around her after the freshly dumped former sorority sister heads to law school. [While T]he sequel brought her to D.C. to join the staff of a congresswoman to pass a bill to ban animal testing," the third Elle Woods film will be "more about female empowerment" and hopes to "draw back in the audience that grew up with the original film and find a new global audience."
Producer Marc Platt, who produced the two Legally Blonde films, will be returning with Platt Productions president Adam Siegel to produce the upcoming third film, as well as be joined by Witherspoon through her production company Hello Sunshine.
No film director has been attached to the project yet, nor have other actors part of the previous films, including Luke Wilson, Jennifer Coolidge, and Selma Blair, been confirmed to be reprising their role.
All I know is that for some reason I have the urge to bend and snap and change the world one day at a time while wearing a pink suit...weird (she says as snapping!)
Update: As of June 7, Reese Witherspoon has taken to Twitter to OFFICIALLY confirm "Legally Blonde 3" is happening, with a simple but sweet tweet to make it official. The film is set to be theatrically released on February 14, 2020.
