And Disney has started with the teasing!
In honor of marking the start of filming of the upcoming live-action Mulan adaptation, Walt Disney Studios released on Monday a first look at its Chinese heroine, Hua Mulan, played by Liu Yifei.
Keeping it clean, but with a strong presence, the first picture and look shared by Disney shows warrior Mulan posed with her sword and ready to defend China.
Niki Caro, the film's director, also took to share the first set picture of the production to her Instagram account:

The set picture was accompanied with the caption, "Mulan. Day #1. Reflections." And that gorgeous shot was all we needed to already start getting excited and imagining/actually feeling the upcoming film!
As shared by Disney, the film will be out in the United States on March 27, 2020. The film was originally slated to be released in theaters on November 2, 2018, but the release date was pushed back to early 2020 as Disney casting directors underwent a year-long global search to find its leading heroine.
Liu Yifei was officially cast in November 2017 as the Chinese warrior, which director Caro documented and celebrated on her Instagram account by sharing a picture of Yifei with the caption: "Our Mulan. I couldn't be happier."
Yifei will be joined by a diverse cast that includes Jet Li as the emperor of China, Donnie Yen as Mulan's mentor Commander Tung, and Gong Li as the film's villainous witch. Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Cheng Pei-Pei, Tzi Ma, Rosalind Chao, Jason Scott Lee, Nelson Lee, Donnie Yen and Chum Ehelepola have also been confirmed to be joining as part of the cast in 2018.
The live-action Mulan adaptation will be inspired by the 1998 Disney animated film of the same name, and see "the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China" according to a statement by Disney. Continuing to describe Mulan a "spirited, determined and quick on her feet," the film will see Hua Mulan take her father's place in the Imperial Army under the name Hua Jun, "becoming one of China's greatest warriors ever."
Production has already started and will take place in China and New Zealand. The live-action adaptation will be based on a script written by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hyne. The film will be produced by Chris Bender, Jason Reed, and Jake Weiner, while executive produced by Bill Kong, Barrie M. Osborne and Tim Coddington.
The upcoming 2020 live-action Mulan adapation will become the second Disney film to be directed by a female director with a budget of over $100 million (Ava DuVernay's 2018 A Wrinkle in Time being the first), so talk about double the girl power!
Mulan will be film director Niki Caro's second collaboration with Disney, as she previously directed McFarland, USA which was released in 2015 and co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Mayhem Pictures. Caro has also been at the helm as director of other films including Whale Rider and The Zookeeper's Wife.
We can totally wait until 2020 - Mulan is a girl worth waiting (and fighting...well, she really does a great deal of the fighting...) for!
Sincerely, Dora Goto
