On October 20, Chalamet posted on Instagram what has become the first behind-the-scenes look at the Boston-based production of Little Women directed by Greta Gerwig, showing Saoirse Ronan (who will be playing Josephine "Jo" March in the adaptation) embracing Gerwig. The picture was captioned "littlewomen. (Rehearsal pic couple weeks ago :)." Though the picture was blurry, it was more than enough to get fans excited (with very good reason) and offer a first look at the anticipated film!
Chalamet has previously voiced his excitement for collaborating with Gerwig and for his character Laurie that he will be portraying in the 2019 adaptation, telling Variety at the red carpet for the LA premiere of his latest film Beautiful Boy, which is out in select theaters nationwide, that Laurie is "a great character" and he "would do anything Greta wanted me to be a part of."
"I knew 'Little Women'; I hadn't read it," Chalamet continued telling Variety. "But I've read it since. I understood it to be a literary classic, but it's crazy, day by day in the rehearsals, I get more imbued in the legend of it all. We're shooting in the Massachusetts area where it was written, so we have a lot of people on the crew or that are just around that, like, the book is very dear to their heart and to their youths, as well."
Little Women will not be Timothée Chalamet's, Saoirse Ronan's, and director Greta Gerwig's first collaboration together, as Ronan and Chalamet previously starred in Gerwig's debut film, Academy Award nominated Lady Bird. They will be joined by Meryl Streep (who will play Aunt March), Laura Dern (Marmee March), and Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, and Eliza Scanlen who with Ronan will play the March sisters.
Originally Emma Stone had been cast to play oldest March sister, Meg, but due to obligations in promoting her upcoming film The Favourite, which will hit U.S. theaters in December, she was forced to leave the production and Watson was cast in her place. James Norton, Bob Odenkirk, Louis Garrel and Chris Cooper also joined the production in the following months after the initial June announcement confirming Gerwig as director.
Gerwig's film adaptation of the American novel is being co-produced by Robin Swicord, Amy Pascal, and Denise Di Novi, and will differ from the 1994 film adaptation (which was written by Swicord and produced by Di Novi) in that it will focus more on the life of the March sisters as young adults after they've left home and will be "taking a look at what it is for a young woman to enter the adult world" as Swicord told LA Times. While the film will incorporate some childhood flashbacks into the growth of the March sisters, it will abstain from a linear narrative and instead focus more on exploring themes relative to the developing and shaping of the March sisters as young adult women.
"It's very adult and interesting and thoughtful," Swicord said about Little Women. "Greta has a wonderfully associative, well-furnished mind. Her take on the novel more than convinced us that we could bring something new to the screen."
Principal photography for Little Women began on October 5, 2018, in Boston, Massachusetts.
The film is set to be released on December 25, 2019 - and yes, Santa, it will be everything I wanted for Christmas!
Are you as hopeful and excited as I am for Greta Gerwig's upcoming novel adaptation of the beloved American literary classic as I am? Do let me know - adorable cat GIFs to help convey your excitement are very much valid.
