Nothing like great news that cool films are currently being made!
Sing, a 2016 animated Illumination film which followed koala theater owner Buster Moon (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) as he tries to save his theater by starting a singing competition in which he mistakenly offers a $100,000 prize, is getting a sequel and it is officially in development.
While Universal and Illumination had confirmed in early 2017 that they planned to develop a sequel, the film studios have kept quiet since about the production of the Sing sequel. That is until one of the animated film's stars Taron Egerton, who voiced teenage gorilla Johnny who wants nothing more than to sing and not be part of his father's criminal gang, shared a photo on Instagram backstage of a voiceover recording session.
And just like that with one Instagram post, Egerton confirmed production for Sing 2 has officially started!
While Garth Jennings has been listed as the writer for Sing 2, he hasn't been confirmed as the director of the upcoming 2020 film, like Sing which he wrote and directed. Jennings also voiced Miss Crawly, Buster Moon's elderly iguana assistant.
Full cast of Sing 2 hasn't been confirmed, but Sing was comprised of a talented voice cast including Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Seth MacFarlane, Taron Egerton, John C. Reilly and Tori Kelly. All cast are expected to come back.
Great commercial expectations are set for the upcoming sequel, as Sing generated more than $634 million worldwide. The film even earned critical accolades, as it was nominated for both Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song at the 2017 Golden Globes.
Sing is not the only Illumination film to have been made into a sequel, as Secret Life of Pets 2 is coming out in June 7, 2019, while Minions 2 is scheduled to come out July 3, 2020.
Sing 2 isn't the only upcoming film that Egerton is excited about, as he will also star in the British music biopic Rocketman as Elton John, whose song "I'm Still Standing" Egerton's character Johnny sang in Sing interestingly enough. It will hit theaters in May 31.

Sing 2 will come out on December 25, 2020. It will become Illumination's 12th feature film.
While it will be a wait until the film comes out, don't you worry about a thing - with a talented cast as it was comprised in the first film, Sing 2 looks like it will be a good one!
Sincerely, a very excited Dora Goto
