On March 6, Disney unveiled on social media the first teaser poster for the live-action sequel film of the Sleeping Beauty villain, titled Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
But the House of the Mouse wasn't done creating excitement, as it also revealed in the early morning post that Mistress of Evil was coming closer than we expected: in October 18, 2019, just a few days early from Halloween to get some early wicked fun. Mistress of Evil had originally been scheduled to be released on May 29, 2020.
While it's been five years since the original title film, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is a sequel to be looking forward to. Not only was Maleficent well-received by fans, but it was a global commercial hit that made $758.5 million grossing worldwide, which gave a new, dark twist and perspective upon its title character and other classic characters we saw in 1959's Sleeping Beauty.
The fantasy sequel will take place several years after the original 2014 film and see the blossoming of the relationship between Maleficent and soon-to-be Queen Aurora, as well as new formed alliances and "face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within", per Disney's initial statement confirming the sequel.
While production for Mistress of Evil wrapped in August 2018, casting for the sequel was confirmed in late May last year. Cast members confirmed to be returning from the first film include Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville. They will be joined by Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Harris Dickinson.
Pfeiffer, who will be playing Queen Ingrith in the upcoming sequel, shared her excitement on January 29, teasing on Instagram.
Chiwetel Ejiofor, whose character has not been revealed yet, also shared enthusiasm for the upcoming Disney sequel, telling The New York Times in late February he believes Mistress of Evil will expand the world created in Maleficent "in a fascinating way."
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is directed by Joachim Rønning (who co-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales with Espen Sandberg) and based on a screenplay co-written by Linda Woolverton, Micah Fitzerman-Blue, and Noah Harpster. The sequel was produced by Joe Roth and Angelina Jolie.
Mistress of Evil will come out along a pretty exciting fall line-up including both an untitled Blumhouse horror film and MGM's animated feature The Addams Family, and a week after Zombieland 2: Double Tap and Gemini Man, starring Will Smith and directed by Ang Lee, synonym for "October is a month to be really looking forward to!" (And example of a long sentence...)
